# Cultural assumptions
Online I don’t use the name my parents gave me. I always use one of a handful of netonyms, gilme or avocadia being the usual suspects. This is hardly a unique phenonomon. So it annoys me greatly when I sign up for services online and they force me to enter a First name and a Surname. No. I will use a netonym for my username and my name. I don’t care if you – generic web developer – thinks it is cheesy, or adolescent. Stop making assumptions that everyone’s culture is the same as yours.
I wonder what people with only one name do. I know in Indonesia it is reasonably common for a person to have only one name – Wiranto, the General responsible for a few war crimes in East Timor springs to mind. Do they do what I do, write "Fuck off name nazis"?
