# Tooth and Claw
I managed to miss the first episode of Doctor Who this season. I’m pretty sure it is only the first episode I missed. I just saw Tooth and Claw at any rate, and the BBC tells me it is the second episode of the series. I didn’t actually notice which season so there’s a chance I missed all of season two. I swear, the ABC should advertise all their good shows on the other channels – it should be cheap, they’ve only got the one.
Just after the halfway point I said to D, in a moment of sheer unadulterated brilliance you understand, that something from earlier was going to become significant in a few minutes. When it did, D, recognising my sheer brilliance, told me that I was right. Yes, I am well adept at recognising the rule of thumb that the gun has to be introduced in the first act if you want to use it in the third. I didn’t actually realise that the ammunition has to get introduced in the last bits of the second act, but there you are.
Moments after I said that, she mentions the Torchwood Insititute. After the first season’s arc fell flat because of its Shamalayan-esque twist and after the X-Files disappeared up it’s own arse, I am increasingly skeptical of arcs. Particularly those involving a secret organisation out to get the protaganist. On the other hand, if it all resolves with UNIT leading a night-raid on the Torchwood Institute, it be all worth it. Particularly if the night-raid goes as well as they do in Call of Cthulhu.

# The Zuna
Apple’s iPod design and marketing were aimed at consumers, while Microsoft embraced the artists that create music and other content, according to analysts.
Yeah, that’ll work. Cause it’s the artists who buy your product, dontchaknow.
I believe the translation is – “We are going to let the record companies screw you even more than Apple does.”

# Comments
Apparantly the comments system is rooted. I tried to avoid the use of cookies, just because, but it doesn’t work as well in practice as it does when the commenter acts exactly like I do.
I’ll fix it tomorrow. Probably. I do in fact have about six weeks of work and handover to do in the four weeks I have remaining in purgatory.
Update: Well, four weeks of work now. I had a big codebase that was basically uncompilable because I had tried to “fix” it about fifteen months ago and then got distracted by $project. So on the one hand, bad for doing fixes that didn’t need to be done, but on the other good because no-one has noticed because there’s been no bugs in that app for fifteen months.
The comments system might be fixed, probably. The problem was I was trying to be clever and match commenters up to existing entries in system by matching them on url followed by name. Seems too much VB.NET makes me forget that

# More change
I’ve been working at $company for five-and-a-half years now. I just resigned.
I should have gone months, even years, ago, but I’ve always held out thinking it might just get better, or that I’ll be making life hard for others. I still will be making life hard for others but I just don’t care enough to make me stay.
So, shall I tell you of the new place, the company where I shall be starting in four weeks? Prepare to be underwhelmed. They are a web media company, smaller even than $company, but they are paying me a shitload more – yes, rank greed played a part in my move – and they are giving me the role I asked for at $company. As a bonus, they operate http://www.adultmatchmaker.com.au, allowing tWM to tell people that I “work in porn” and for me to freak my mum out.

# Level One Human

My first reaction was “How would it have an AC of 6, it would need a DEX of 18 to get that kind of bonus.”
And then I said “Oh no, of course, it is Third Edition, the 6 is from the -4 DEX penalty“
And then I said, “Oh god, I am such a fucking geek”
I wonder what alignme…oh wait, I’ve had that discussion before, babies are Chaotic Neutral

# Piers Akerman is an attention whore
It was revealed to me over the weekend – or perhaps last weekend, I am really out of synch at the moment – that I am reasonably high in the search results for ‘Piers Akerman’ an opinion columnist here in Australia. Second page, in fact, although I misspelled his name. Then again, so does everyone, even Tim ‘Spelling Pedantry’ Blair. Given that I loathe the bloviating buffoon, I only wish my little rant on how Piers Akerman is a whore was a little higher, like, above or just below the link to his new News Limited hosted blog
To be fair though, I did read the three entries to date and laughed once, and it wasn’t even at Piers! Maybe there is an element of the bigotry of low expectations – since I knew it was a blog I wasn’t reading it as harshly as I do his columns. Which translated means I expect far less from blogs than I do from newspaper columns. The alternative is that he sells his point more forcefully/farcically in columns.
It would be interesting to do a blind test and see if I really am being a snob, subconciously expecting blogs to be inherently crappier sources of discourse than I do columns. Espicially since I thought I believed that newspaper columns were essentially trolls and flamebait.
