# Desperation?
Emailed to IT department.
I hated C++ when I was at university, hated it with a fiery passion. It was when I came up with a term I have used often since, that C++ is an inverted pearl, a core of beauty surrounded by layer upon layer of irritating crud. I hated it so much that my mind would rebel everytime I came to study it and simply refuse. It would dump core and reboot.
I barely passed that course. I would write K&R C code for the tutorials as much as possible. For the two assignments I somehow managed to get away with writing C code while the other guy did all the OO garbage. For the mid-term I fluked a pass, somehow, by dint of my basic understanding of the theory behind OO.
When it came to the final, I was toast. There was no way I was going to pass because I couldn’t actually write OO code. So I bought a book. One of my classmates saw this book and declared it was the ultimate sign of desperation. That book was Sams “C++ in 21 days”. The premise being that you do an chapter a day and you will understand C++ in 21 days. This is a book that might as well be called “You so don’t get C++, and you never will”, aimed at middle managers and accountants looking to switch careers at 40.
Does anyone else find it amusing that our current lead C++ programmer has “Visual C++ in 21 days” on his desk? :- )
