NSW captain Danny Buderus, prop Luke Bailey, second-rower Nathan Hindmarsh and winger Matt King are rumoured to have been lucky to survive last month’s 25-18 loss in Brisbane.
I can’t make much of an argument for Matt King because, well, I don’t recall much of him during the first game. I am pretty sure all the damage was done down the other wing, though.
The NSW pack was comprehensively rolled by the Queenslanders and much of the blame for that has to fall on the props and second rowers. But Hindmarsh and Bailey? Hindmarsh worked his arse off in that game, and Bailey came off the bench. What about Mason who put in his usual lacklustre origin performance? Brent White spent half the game getting blood cleaned up, Mason spent half the game getting his hamstring massaged, Brent Kite underperformed, but it is Hindmarsh and Bailey who have their Origin careers threatened.
And Buderus? Who when Queensland were tearing NSW apart in the second half spent the greater part of that time on the bench at the behest of his coach? It’s his last chance? That’s just outrageous.
If the selectors want to make threats, they should make credible ones.
