# Headphones
My iPod headphones gave up the ghost last Thursday. Well, they’ve been gradually been giving up the ghost for months; I thought I had been going deaf since I needed to turn the iPod up to max to be able to hear various podcasts and even some music, but it turns out the headphones were at fault. They are hardware so it should go without saying by now that I do not understand why the volume through these headphones were slipping but it was.
Last Thursday I found that the only way to get anything through the right speaker was to hold the wire just so while standing perfectly still, holding my breath and facing North-North-East. I wasn’t sure though if it was the headphones or the connection in the iPod so as soon as I got home I had tWM fetch her headphones and tested the connection.
I probably should have taken some time to turn the volume down: it was at maximum. The song was pretty bass heavy, Spiderbait’s Don’t Kill The Nipper, and when I un-paused the music, the sheer thereness of it poured down my ear canal and crashed against my eardrum like…well, like a wave. Although it would be more illustrative if I compared it to a tsunami surging across a Sri Lankan beach only to strike some unmovable object like, say, the right wing’s inability to grasp the idea of DDT-resistant mosquitos.
I could feel Janet’s guitar in toenail clippings I had snipped off a week earlier.
Anyway, on the weekend it was tWM’s birthday. Fourteen if you must know – that’s 98 in dog years, which I have to admit is so tangential that it is almost sunburn – and we took her into the city so that she could spend an hour in the large Supré – tween, tween and skank clothing – store on George Street. Speaking of tangents, this store is so big it actually descends two levels into the bowels of the earth, which is practically begging for a snarky literary comparison.
We also check out the markets in Chinatown and I bought one of those remotes. I had assumed that it would also come with headphones since it would be a pain to use it with the standard headphones – cords too long to be practicable and all – but no. I checked out the Apple store online for headphones. $48 dollars. For headphones! I know they are pretty good headphones, but $48?! For that I’d also want to receive a free Potion of Charisma, a Hoodie of Snide Superiority and the ability to speak Japanese to pretty cameras.
Think I’ll just go back to those markets and pick up some for a tenth of the price.
